Unlike its internal TV Wonder cards, you needn't connect an audio cable from the device to your sound card; all of the audio is transferred over USB along with the video. Being a USB device, setup is a snap. Connect the USB 2. Setting everything up is so easy that the four steps are displayed on the back of the box to give buyers an idea of how simple it is to install.
It's only slightly more complicated than installing a monitor, it's that easy and hassle-free. Since the device is an external USB 2. The only odd part about the install was that the first time I ran the software I got a high-pitched whine for audio that still persisted after I closed the TV application.
Rebooting cleared it up and it hasn't happened since, but you might want to make sure you speakers are set reasonably low when first running it just in case. The suite is the same that comes with all of its Wonder line of products, so if you've seen that before then it's all old hat. The ATI TV application allows you to set up scheduled recording times for shows and optionally repeat them daily, weekly, monthly or what-have-you, TiVo style. Clicking once on a show bar will load that program into the preview window in the application, and then clicking on the preview window will load it up in ATI's TV application.
No hiccups, jerky video or any other high-bandwidth video problems ever occurred. The only sort of video errors that I ever saw was due to the generally shady cable signal coming into my apartment building. The TV Wonder won't clear up signal problems, though if you have a clear cable connection or are running video via S-Video or composite then video will be crystal-clean.
There's a slight delay in the video and audio from what's being input, maybe about a second, which means that games aren't very playable. Watching TV, DVD movies or anything else of that nature works perfectly fine since the delay doesn't matter there, though gaming doesn't work well.
You'll need to turn to a 3rd party video application for quicker response, so do your research prior to picking this up if you want to connect a console to your PC or laptop. In fact, we'd recommend going with an internal PCI solution for general USB latency reasons, but if you need to game on a laptop then you should be able to get this working reasonably well.
