Have you checked Compaq's website? Take a look at the autoexec. I went to compaq's site and navigated through their support section. The updates they have listed didnt appear to be what i need.
I also checked the config. There wasn't. So i found a generic cdrom driver disk and installed it. Or just something i need to change? I copied Oakcdrom. The computer boots up normally. I get a cdrom icon in My Computer, but it will not read any cd's. When you try it pops up a box that is empty and says 0 objects in folder. There was already one there before, but this one has an exclamation mark on it.
I checked the properties and it says that all the drivers are not installed for this device. Now what? I managed to find a longer cable and attatch the cdrom to the same cable as the hd. Now the cdrom works fine. Have you tried reading more than one cd? Is the cdrom working from dos? Try booting with a bootable floppy with cdrom support and pop a cd in the drive and try to get a directory. Joined Jan 14, Messages Thanks for all the help though. As Seen On. Nothing extreme will go on here, just your standard hardware upgrades, and later, software installs.
Here's the rundown I still feel like I paid too much, but I haven't had any luck finding anything local and this was one of the cheaper ones on ebay. I've wanted a for a while to mess around with. I want to put Win 3. Another big plus and probably the primary reason I wanted it was because it has both the 3.
So, what do I want to do? Well, nothing fancy, really. I'd like to put a DX2 in it if it would be worth the trouble. I seem to recall coming across old machines when I first became a PC Tech like 10 years ago that had irreplaceable chips on them. Hard to tell from the only pic I could find. This should be fun.. Must have since I'm going to be retro gaming on it.
Or wait.. I guess a lot still used the PC speaker, huh? I put it up on my own web server, never know when that link may become unavailable. Here's what it looks like ebay pic : Aside from cleaning it up and doing some experimentation with OS's, that's all I really have planned for now.
Unfortunately, I can't be sure on all my hardware till it gets here. In the meantime, tell me what you think.. June 30, , PM. Comment Post Cancel. Dave Farquhar. July 1, , AM. Threads like these always end up being useful to somebody, especially when you've got some hardware with some strange quirks, like Compaq s often do.
Regarding the price, if you're willing to hold out for long enough, systems like this will come up very inexpensively, but "long enough" could mean weeks or it could mean years, depending on your luck. A machine capable of running Windows 95 with a network card and a 5. And you can run early Win95 titles on the machine too. I had a Presario that had exactly the same memory configuration as your Prolinea Some of those low-profile Compaqs can be goofy regarding CPU upgrades.
The only way to know for sure what your CPU situation is will be to open it up and look inside. Some SX systems had a soldered-on SX CPU with a upgrade socket, which limited your upgrade options somewhat, and others had the CPU in a regular socket so you could replace them with something faster. I do think, given the model number on the case, you probably have a SX.
Usually if they included an "s" in the model number, it was an SX. But, since it has a 2. Given that it only has 4 MB of RAM in it, someone harvested any memory upgrades it might have come with, but when SX25s were new, the mainstream hard drive size was around MB.
It'll be faster, quieter, and more reliable. I spent way too much time in college playing DOS games on systems very similar to this one, so I think you've got a nice find there.
They had a soldered SX, but also had an "upgrade socket" which allowed you to plug in a DX IIRC, it just disabled the soldered processor. July 1, , PM. Other is socket 1 or perhaps 0? I do know they will not usually tolerate double sided ram. Perhaps thats why you have issues with bank 1? At least the integrated video is pretty decent! Tseng et I also have a IBM Valupoint board that fits into the same chassis! I be willing to scrap one for the mobo if you wanted, due to one having a pretty sad looking case.
Only thing I dont like about them are the rail system. Somehow over the years I lost the rails for the 5. Last edited by twolazy ; July 1, , PM. I know this as true because on one has 4 16mb simms with 64mb detected. The unit's easy to access and expand, especially when inserting additional RAM except that the hard drive must first be removed.
There are four memory expansion sockets, which accept snap-in modules for ease of insertion. Case dimensions are about 16 inches wide, 15 inches deep, and 4 inches high, so good design is evident in the way limited space is handled here. The first thing I noticed was that text mode was in monochrome; I had to experiment with some paint programs to find out which video-board specification worked best for high-resolution graphics displays.
One that did was a Sigma VESA driver, and a brief online search located one for nearly all my graphics utilities. Windows and Mathematica were still showing graphics in monochrome, as was text mode.
More on-line searching revealed the source of the problem.
